Washington Wildfires Burn 250,000 Acres, Trigger Mass Evacuations Across State
Massive wildfires force evacuations across Washington state communities.
Wildfires burning across more than 250,000 acres in Washington state have triggered widespread evacuations, power outages and emergency measures, state officials said on Saturday. More than a dozen fires are active across the state, with thousands of firefighters working to contain the rapidly spreading blazes amid high temperatures and strong winds.
Washington Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove said around 4,000 personnel were battling multiple fires across the state. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and imposed a burn ban as authorities warned that weather conditions could make firefighting efforts more difficult. Officials said no injuries or deaths linked to the fires had been reported at the time.
The city of Spokane, one of the largest population centres in eastern Washington with around 230,000 residents, has been among the worst affected areas. The Old Trails Fire in the region had spread across approximately 3,000 acres and threatened nearly 4,000 structures, according to Washington State Forester George Geissler. Several important facilities, including water reclamation sites, a waste-energy plant and a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, were evacuated as a precaution.

Authorities said around 200 homes in Spokane had been evacuated by Saturday afternoon, although officials expected the number to rise as fire conditions continued to change. The situation also affected power supplies, with utility company Avista reporting that nearly 60,000 customers in eastern Washington were without electricity.
Officials warned that strong winds and extreme heat throughout the weekend were creating additional challenges for firefighters. Upthegrove said around 450,000 acres had already burned across Washington state during the summer season, describing the scale of the fires as an unusual and serious situation for communities across the region.
The Spokane blaze is among five major complex fires currently burning in Washington. The largest, the Kaiser Canyon Fire in northeastern Washington, has affected approximately 134,000 acres. Firefighting efforts have received support from the National Guard and crews from more than a dozen US states as authorities continue evacuation operations and containment efforts.
