War Escalates As Ukraine Strikes Moscow Refinery Again, Zelensky Calls It Justified Response
Ukraine strikes Moscow refinery; Zelensky calls it justified response.
Ukraine has carried out a strike on an oil refinery in Moscow for the second time within a week, with videos circulating on social media showing thick black smoke and flames rising over parts of the Russian capital. The latest attack marks an escalation in Ukraine’s ongoing campaign targeting energy infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, according to local reports and visuals shared online.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as a “justified response” to recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. In a post shared on social media platform X, Zelensky said the operation reflected retaliation for continued strikes on civilian and strategic infrastructure across Ukraine. The Ukrainian leadership has linked the latest wave of strikes to intensified Russian air raids on Kyiv earlier this week.
According to Ukrainian officials, a missile and drone barrage killed at least 11 people and damaged multiple sites in the capital, including the Dormition Cathedral, which is part of the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. Officials in Kyiv described the attack as one of the most destructive aerial assaults in months.

The Russian strike on Kyiv reportedly impacted several cities and caused widespread damage to both civilian and cultural infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities have said such attacks underscore the continued pressure on urban centres and heritage sites, further escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
In his statement, Zelensky said, “This is a fully justified response to Russian attacks on our cities and communities, and another important result of our warriors’ work against facilities that sustain Russia’s war machine.” The comments come as Ukraine continues to defend its strategy of targeting energy and industrial assets inside Russia, which it argues are linked to Moscow’s military operations.
The latest exchange of strikes highlights the widening geographic scope of the war, with both sides increasingly targeting critical infrastructure beyond the immediate frontlines. While Russia has not issued an immediate detailed response to the reported refinery strike, the incident adds to a growing pattern of cross-border attacks that continue to intensify the conflict.
