#BREAKING: Viva IL Papa! Pope Francis Makes Appearance; Blesses Overjoyed Crowd from Hospital Balcony

Pope Francis Blesses Crowd from Hospital Balcony in First Appearance Since Pneumonia Battle

Pope Francis, defying a life-threatening bout of pneumonia, appeared on a balcony at Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday, blessing a cheering crowd in his first public outing in five weeks. The 88-year-old pontiff, wheeled out to greet hundreds chanting “Viva il papa!” gave a thumbs-up before his anticipated release later today, marking the end of a 38-day hospitalization—the longest of his 12-year papacy.

Admitted on February 14 with worsening bronchitis, Francis’ condition deteriorated into a complex respiratory infection and double pneumonia, complicated by his chronic lung disease and prior lung surgery. Doctors reported two critical respiratory crises, requiring ventilation masks and manual mucus aspiration, yet he remained alert throughout. “There was a moment when many thought he might not make it,” said Mario Balsamo, a local shop owner, reflecting the widespread concern.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, Gemelli’s medical chief, hailed Francis’ recovery as remarkable, noting that not all survive such severe cases. “When he said, ‘I’m still alive,’ we knew he’d turned the corner,” Alfieri shared, though the pope’s voice remains weak from lung damage. His treatment continues with oral medication for a fungal infection and physiotherapy, with supplemental oxygen awaiting him at the Vatican’s Domus Santa Marta.

The Vatican has scheduled two months of rest, with no confirmed engagements—including Easter services or an April 8 meeting with King Charles III. As the 2025 Holy Year draws pilgrims to Rome, Francis’ return brings relief to the faithful, who prayed fervently for the resilient pontiff.
