Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday, greeted by an enthusiastic Indian diaspora that celebrated his visit with a traditional Bihari cultural performance known as Geet Gawai. This vibrant Bhojpuri musical ensemble, performed by women from the community, reflects the enduring cultural ties between India and Mauritius, rooted in the heritage brought by immigrants from India’s Bhojpuri belt. Modi, visibly moved, joined in the celebration as the performers honored him with their songs.
Expressing his gratitude, Modi took to X, stating, “Deeply touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in Mauritius. Their strong connection to Indian heritage, culture, and values is truly inspiring. This bond of history and heart continues to thrive across generations.” Upon arriving at his hotel, he was met with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and waves of the Indian tricolor, underscoring the diaspora’s pride and affection.
Geet Gawai, recognized by UNESCO in 2016 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, holds special significance in Mauritius, particularly during weddings, where it invokes blessings from deities. The performance offered a poignant reminder of the shared history between the two nations.
Modi landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, where Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam welcomed him with a garland. “I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for this special gesture,” Modi posted on X. “This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration.” Accompanying Ramgoolam were the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, and over 200 dignitaries.
During his visit, Modi will meet President Dharam Gokhool, hold discussions with Ramgoolam, and address a community program, further strengthening the ties between India and Mauritius.
