Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Climbs to 589 as Global Rescue Efforts Intensify

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen sharply to 589, while the number of injured has climbed to 2,980, according to Acting President Delcy Rodriguez. The updated figures were announced on Friday as rescue operations continued across the affected regions following the powerful earthquakes that hit the country on Wednesday evening. Authorities said emergency teams remain focused on locating survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures and providing immediate assistance to affected communities.

Speaking alongside government and military officials, Rodriguez welcomed the arrival of international rescue teams that have travelled to Venezuela to support search and relief operations. She said authorities were working around the clock to rescue those still trapped under debris and to ensure that emergency aid reaches the worst-hit areas. "We are going to rescue the people who are trapped," she said, adding that rescue personnel were working tirelessly despite the challenging conditions.

Officials identified the coastal state of La Guaira as the area most severely affected by the earthquakes, which measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The government has deployed additional military personnel to the region to assist with rescue efforts, maintain public order and facilitate the distribution of food, drinking water and other essential supplies. Emergency shelters and medical services have also been mobilised to support displaced residents and those injured in the disaster.
