Valero Port Arthur Refinery Fire: Diesel Hydrotreater Unit Severely Damaged, Highways Shut

Fire damages Valero's Texas refinery diesel unit, prompting nearby highway closures Monday.

A fire broke out at Valero Energy Corp.’s Port Arthur refinery on Monday, damaging a diesel hydrotreater unit and prompting partial shutdowns at the plant. The refinery, located about 90 miles east of Houston, reported the incident late in the day, with smoke visible from the site and nearby areas. Officials confirmed that the fire caused severe damage to the unit, though a decision on a full plant shutdown had not yet been made.

According to sources familiar with the incident, the fire occurred near the refinery’s fluid catalytic cracker, a critical component of operations. As a precautionary measure, local authorities temporarily closed two nearby state highways to ensure public safety. Valero stated that all personnel were accounted for and that a few minor injuries were reported, none of which appeared to be life-threatening.

Emergency response teams arrived promptly at the refinery to control the blaze and contain potential hazards. Firefighting units worked to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent units, which handle highly flammable materials, while assessing the structural and operational damage to the diesel hydrotreater. Officials emphasized the importance of caution due to the presence of heavy sour crude processed at the facility.

The Port Arthur refinery is one of Valero’s largest, with the capacity to process approximately 435,000 barrels of heavy sour crude daily. Analysts have noted that any prolonged disruption at this facility could impact fuel supply chains and refinery output in the region. Company spokespersons stressed that operations were being carefully monitored to minimise any wider effects on production.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud boom and seeing thick smoke rising from the refinery. Media outlets, including ABC affiliate 12News, covered the incident, highlighting the scale of the fire and the swift response by emergency crews. Valero officials are coordinating with local authorities and safety inspectors to investigate the cause of the fire.

The refinery fire underscores the risks associated with large-scale fuel processing operations, particularly in units handling volatile materials. Valero said it will conduct a full assessment of the damage and implement safety protocols to prevent similar incidents. Meanwhile, authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised residents in nearby areas to exercise caution until the site is fully secured.
