US Vice President Vance Issues Stark Warning to Iran Amid Ceasefire Tensions

US Vice President warns Iran of proportional response to further aggression.

The United States and Iran exchanged fresh military strikes after Washington accused Tehran of attacking a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation despite an existing ceasefire agreement. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces launched strikes against Iranian military targets in response to the alleged drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely on June 25. The latest developments have raised concerns about the stability of the ceasefire and the security of one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes.

CENTCOM described the operation as a "powerful response" to what it called an unprovoked attack on commercial shipping. US officials said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar positions. Washington maintained that its military remains deployed in the region to safeguard freedom of navigation and ensure the safety of commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passes.

Iran responded shortly after the American operation, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claiming responsibility for attacks on US positions in the Gulf region. In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the Guards warned that any further military action by the United States would trigger a broader and stronger response. The exchange of strikes has intensified tensions in the region, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a wider conflict.

US Vice President JD Vance issued a strong warning to Tehran, stating that Iran had agreed to the ceasefire and should resolve any disagreements through diplomatic channels rather than military action. In a post on X, Vance said the United States had honoured its commitments under the agreement and warned that "violence will be met with violence" if Iran carried out any further attacks. His remarks reflected Washington's position that any violation of the ceasefire would invite an immediate response.

The latest confrontation comes despite a 14-point peace framework signed on June 17 by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, aimed at ending months of conflict in the Middle East. The agreement called for an immediate cessation of military operations and laid the foundation for negotiations on a broader settlement. Officials from both countries also recently concluded an initial round of talks in Switzerland as part of that diplomatic process.

While the ceasefire remains formally in place, the renewed exchange of military action underscores the fragile security situation in the region. The United States has reiterated its commitment to protecting international shipping lanes, while Iran has maintained that it will respond forcefully to any future attacks. As investigations into the latest incidents continue and diplomatic contacts remain active, global attention is focused on whether both sides can prevent further escalation and preserve the broader peace process.
