US Senate Greenlights $70 Billion Funding Package For ICE And Border Protection
US Senate approves $70 billion for ICE funding boost.
The United States Senate has passed legislation approving an additional $70 billion in funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, marking a significant boost to the country’s immigration enforcement apparatus. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for final consideration.
The Senate voted 52-47 in favour of the measure in an early morning session on Friday, with the legislation receiving no support from Democratic senators. One Republican also voted against the bill, but the narrow GOP majority was sufficient to secure its passage.
A key point of contention in the legislation is the inclusion of a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. Critics have raised concerns that the provision could potentially be used to compensate political allies of President Donald Trump over allegations of government misconduct, though supporters of the bill have disputed such interpretations.

Senate Republican Leader John Thune defended the provision, describing it as a “settled issue.” He cited testimony from acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who indicated that the Department of Justice would not pursue actions related to the fund. However, Democrats have argued that such assurances are not legally binding and have called for greater safeguards in the legislation.
The bill reflects the Trump administration’s broader push to expand immigration enforcement capacity, including increased funding for federal agencies responsible for border security and deportation operations. Supporters argue the additional resources are necessary to address migration pressures and strengthen national security. The legislation’s future now depends on the House of Representatives, where it is expected to face further debate over its scale, funding priorities and the controversial provisions attached to it.
