US Republican Speaker Says 'Israel’s Plans Shaped U.S. Iran Offensive'
Speaker says Israel’s determination influenced Trump’s Iran strike decision; lawmakers fault administration for sparse briefing.
Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said on Tuesday that Israel’s determination to strike Iran left President Donald Trump with a “very difficult” decision regarding U.S. involvement in the escalating Middle East conflict. Johnson made the comments following a classified briefing at the Capitol, which left lawmakers with limited clarity on the purpose, cost, and next steps of the U.S. operation.
Describing the U.S. strike as a “defensive operation,” Johnson said Israel was determined to act against Iran “with or without American support,” prompting Trump to decide whether to back the Israeli offensive. Johnson warned that Iran would likely retaliate against U.S. personnel and assets immediately, adding to the administration’s security concerns.
However, some lawmakers expressed skepticism about the immediacy of the threat. Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, stated, “There was no imminent threat to the United States of America by the Iranians. There was a threat to Israel.” His comments highlighted a partisan divide over the U.S. rationale for involvement.

Other key figures, including Senators Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, participated in briefings with congressional members. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the sessions, calling the responses “completely and totally insufficient” and raising concerns about transparency and congressional oversight.
Lawmakers also indicated that the Trump administration is expected to seek supplemental funding from Congress to cover the costs of the operation. Discussions over this emergency funding are likely to become a point of contention as the Middle East crisis continues to unfold.
Observers note that the briefings underscore the delicate balance the U.S. is attempting to strike: supporting Israel while avoiding an unplanned escalation with Iran that could draw American forces deeper into regional conflict.
