US, Pakistan Pledge Cooperation Against Terror Groups

Nations vow to tackle BLA, ISIS-K, and Taliban.

Pakistan and the United States have pledged to strengthen their partnership to combat major militant groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), ISIS-Khorasan, and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), following a high-level counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad on Tuesday. The talks, held a day after the US designated the BLA as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, marked a significant step in deepening bilateral cooperation.

Co-chaired by Pakistan’s Special Secretary for the UN, Nabeel Munir, and the US Department of State’s Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Gregory D. LoGerfo, the dialogue focused on developing robust strategies to counter terrorist threats. A joint statement emphasized their “shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms,” highlighting the need for sustained engagement to ensure regional and global peace.

Both nations underscored the importance of building stronger institutional frameworks to address security challenges and counter the use of emerging technologies by terrorists. The US praised Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to contain groups like the BLA, responsible for attacks such as the Jaffar Express hijacking in 2025, and expressed condolences for civilian and law enforcement losses in recent incidents, including the Khuzdar school bus bombing.

The dialogue also reaffirmed their intent to collaborate in international forums like the United Nations to promote effective counterterrorism measures. The BLA, blacklisted by the US in 2019 and recently redesignated, has been a persistent threat in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, with Pakistan alleging Indian support—a claim India denies.

This renewed cooperation comes amid warming US-Pakistan ties, highlighted by recent high-profile visits, including Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s meetings with US officials, including President Donald Trump. The strengthened partnership signals a unified front against terrorism, aiming to stabilize the region and protect shared security interests.
