US Moves To Revoke Citizenship Of Indian-Origin Man In Fraud Case
US seeks citizenship revocation over $2.5 million fraud case.
The United States government has initiated legal proceedings to revoke the naturalised citizenship of Indian-origin businessman Debashis Ghosh, who has been accused of involvement in a $2.5 million fraud case linked to an aircraft maintenance project. The move is part of a broader action targeting 12 individuals whose citizenship is being challenged over alleged misrepresentation or criminal conduct prior to naturalisation.
According to a statement issued by the US Department of Justice, Ghosh, 62, is accused of conspiring to defraud investors of funds intended for the construction of an aircraft maintenance facility. Authorities allege that the fraudulent activity began before he became a US citizen and continued even after his naturalisation.
The complaint further states that Ghosh misrepresented key facts during his 2012 naturalisation process, including denying any prior criminal conduct. Prosecutors allege that during the legally required period of demonstrating “good moral character,” he was already involved in activities that amounted to crimes involving moral turpitude and that he provided false statements during his citizenship interview.

Under the US Immigration and Nationality Act, naturalised citizenship can be revoked if it is found to have been obtained through concealment of material facts or willful misrepresentation. The Department of Justice argues that Ghosh’s case meets these conditions, making him subject to denaturalisation proceedings.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said individuals who conceal criminal histories or commit fraud during the naturalisation process should not have been granted citizenship in the first place. He added that the administration is taking steps to ensure strict enforcement of immigration laws and to hold accountable those who allegedly obtained citizenship through deception.
