US-Italy Diplomatic Visit Cancelled After Trump Remark On Giorgia Meloni

Trump’s remark triggers diplomatic strain and cancellation of US-Italy visit.

Diplomatic tensions between the United States and Italy escalated after US President Donald Trump made remarks suggesting that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” for a photograph with him during the recent G7 summit, prompting a sharp denial from Rome and a protest move by Italy’s top diplomat.

The controversy emerged following a televised interview aired on Italy’s La7 network, during which Trump was questioned about his interactions at the G7 summit held in Evian-les-Bains. The discussion turned to a widely circulated video showing Trump and Meloni speaking during the summit, including a private conversation on a small couch, which Trump referenced in his comments.

In response, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a strongly worded video statement rejecting Trump’s remarks, calling them “completely fabricated.” She said she was “stunned” by the claims and insisted that neither she nor Italy “begs,” adding that the statements required an immediate response due to their seriousness. Meloni also questioned why such comments were directed at an allied nation.

The diplomatic fallout quickly intensified, with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani describing Trump’s comments as “serious and offensive.” In a significant reaction, Tajani cancelled a planned visit to the United States scheduled for the weekend, signaling Italy’s displeasure over the incident and raising concerns about strain in bilateral relations.

Meloni further suggested that Trump’s remarks were part of a broader pattern of criticism, referencing earlier tensions over policy disagreements, including Italy’s position on international conflicts. She defended her government’s stance and reiterated that Italy maintains its sovereignty and does not seek favour through personal diplomacy.

The episode has added a new layer of friction to US–Italy relations, even as both countries remain key NATO allies. Observers say the incident underscores growing sensitivity around diplomatic optics and public commentary between allied leaders, with both governments now facing pressure to manage the fallout and restore normal diplomatic engagement.
