US-Iran Standoff: US Strikes Three Tankers After Warships Targeted

US forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships operating in regional waters, according to US Central Command. The American military said the aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer involved in the incident successfully avoided what it described as multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks. No US personnel were reported injured in the confrontation.

Following the attempted attacks, US forces targeted two Iranian crude oil tankers, identified as M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1. The vessels were struck off the coast of Kharg Island and near Jask, while a third tanker that was not carrying cargo was disabled in the Gulf of Oman. The United States said the targeted vessels were connected to a wider shadow network allegedly used to generate funds for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups.

US Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the strikes were intended to demonstrate that attacks on American military assets would carry an economic cost. He warned that US forces would continue to defend American personnel and equipment and could target additional elements of Iran’s oil fleet if necessary. The remarks came amid escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran and growing concerns over the security of energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the region.

Iran earlier accused the United States of attacking an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. Iranian reports said there were no casualties in that incident and that the vessel’s crew was being evacuated. The competing accounts highlight the continuing escalation between the two countries, with both sides carrying out or threatening actions that could affect maritime traffic and oil exports from the region.

Kharg Island is particularly important to Iran’s energy sector because it serves as a major export point for the country’s crude oil. Iran is one of the leading oil producers within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and has historically routed a substantial share of its crude exports through the island. Any sustained disruption to its oil infrastructure could therefore have wider implications for regional energy supplies and international crude markets.

The latest strikes come amid a broader confrontation involving Iranian military forces, US naval assets and the country’s oil infrastructure. US officials have indicated that Washington will respond to further attacks on American forces, while Iran has continued to accuse the United States of targeting its vessels and energy facilities. The developments have increased uncertainty around shipping and energy security in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
