US Inflation Rises To 3.8% In April, Commerce Department Reports
US inflation rises to 3.8%, weakening incomes and spending power.
A key inflation indicator in the United States accelerated in April to its highest level in three years, underscoring continued pressure on household budgets as rising costs for gas, food, and other essentials erode consumers’ purchasing power, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department.
The report showed that inflation rose to 3.8% in April compared with the same month a year earlier, up from 3.5% in March. This marks the highest annual increase since May 2023. On a month-to-month basis, prices increased by 0.4%, slowing from the sharper 0.7% rise recorded in March, but still reflecting persistent upward pressure on consumer costs.
Officials noted that price increases were not limited to energy or fuel, with broader categories also seeing gains, raising concerns that inflation could remain elevated in the coming months. The trend may complicate economic policymaking in the United States, particularly as inflation continues to stay above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target level.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, core inflation rose to 3.3% in April from 3.2% in the previous month, marking its highest level since November 2023. While monthly core inflation eased slightly to 0.2%, analysts say the underlying figures suggest that price stability remains uneven across key sectors of the economy.
The persistent inflationary environment is also affecting household incomes. The report showed that personal incomes remained unchanged in April compared to March, while inflation-adjusted incomes actually declined by 0.1%. This indicates that real purchasing power is shrinking, as wage gains fail to keep pace with rising living costs.
Economists say the latest data could influence the U.S. Federal Reserve’s future policy decisions, with interest rates likely to remain elevated for longer if inflation does not ease. The report also carries political implications, as rising prices are expected to remain a key concern for voters ahead of upcoming congressional elections.
