US forces intercept Iranian drones targeting commercial ships in critical Strait of Hormuz
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday that American forces intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian attack drones allegedly launched toward commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to CENTCOM, the drones were intended to target merchant shipping in one of the world's most strategically important maritime trade routes. US officials said all identified threats were neutralised, allowing commercial traffic to continue without disruption.
In a statement posted on social media, CENTCOM said Iran had launched several one-way attack drones in an attempt to strike ships moving through the waterway. The command stated that US military assets successfully engaged and downed the drones in recent hours. It further emphasised that shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz remained unaffected and that the international trade corridor continued to function normally.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy markets, with a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through the narrow waterway each day. Any security incident in the region is closely monitored by governments, energy companies and financial markets due to the potential impact on global trade and energy prices.

The reported drone interceptions come at a sensitive diplomatic moment as the United States and Iran move closer to a possible agreement aimed at easing tensions between the two countries. Recent negotiations have generated optimism on both sides, with officials indicating that a framework for a broader understanding could be finalised within days if remaining issues are resolved.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi signalled progress in the talks, stating on social media that a breakthrough appeared closer than ever. While declining to discuss specific provisions, he urged media organisations and observers to avoid speculation until the agreement is formally concluded. Iranian officials have indicated that full details would be released publicly once negotiations are completed.
US President Donald Trump also expressed confidence regarding the diplomatic process, telling reporters that a settlement related to the conflict with Iran had largely been reached and was awaiting final documentation. While diplomatic efforts continue, the latest military incident in the Strait of Hormuz underscores the fragile security environment in the region and the ongoing challenges facing both sides as they attempt to move toward a formal agreement.
