US Envoy's Kashmir Remark Draws Sharp Response From Pakistan

US envoy's Kashmir remark draws sharp reaction from Pakistan

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor's first visit to Jammu and Kashmir has drawn attention after he described the Union territory as an “important part of India” during his visit to Srinagar. His remarks came after a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and were followed by a sharp response from Pakistan.

Gor, who is regarded as a close aide of US President Donald Trump, visited the region as part of his diplomatic engagements in India. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, he said the region was an important part of India and described his first visit there as a positive experience. He also said he was pleased to see the area and indicated that discussions with Abdullah would lead to further follow-up in Washington.

The ambassador's remarks are significant because Kashmir remains one of the most sensitive disputes between India and Pakistan. New Delhi maintains that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, while Pakistan continues to raise the issue internationally. Against this backdrop, Gor's public description of the region as part of India has drawn particular attention in Pakistan.

Pakistan subsequently criticised the statement and argued that it was inconsistent with what Islamabad described as the United States' commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter. The response reflects the continuing sensitivity surrounding statements by major international powers on the Kashmir issue, particularly when they appear to address the region's political status.

Gor's visit also carried significance because he indicated that the United States could review its existing travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. He said Washington would assess the situation and consider whether the current warning could be downgraded. Any change to the advisory could have implications for American travellers and would also signal Washington's assessment of security conditions in the region.

The visit therefore combined diplomatic engagement with a potentially important shift in how the United States approaches Jammu and Kashmir. Gor's meeting with Abdullah, his comments about the region's place within India and the possibility of reviewing the travel advisory are likely to remain closely watched by both New Delhi and Islamabad as Washington continues to develop its relationship with India.
