US Envoy Sergio Gor Highlights India As Emerging Global Power Centre
US envoy Sergio Gor describes India as an emerging global centre of power.
The United States views India as one of the “new centres of power” in global geopolitics and is actively seeking to deepen bilateral engagement, according to US envoy Sergio Gor, a close ally of President Donald Trump. Speaking on Friday, Gor said the US administration recognises India’s rapid economic growth and strategic potential, describing the relationship as one that is being actively expanded across multiple domains.
He said Washington is “identifying new centres of power” and sees India as a key partner in this evolving global framework. Gor’s remarks come at a time when diplomatic engagement between the two countries has been under strain, even as efforts continue to stabilise ties. Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India as part of ongoing attempts to repair friction in the relationship following a series of policy disagreements in recent months.
Tensions have reportedly included trade disputes, tariff hikes, and geopolitical differences, even as both sides continue to cooperate in strategic sectors. Despite these challenges, Gor emphasised that bilateral cooperation remains strong in areas such as technology, defence, and supply chain resilience. A key focus of the partnership is the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), which has expanded beyond semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing to include critical minerals, biotechnology, energy, and space technology.

Gor said the framework is already generating measurable outcomes, with investment flows increasing in both directions. He noted that American companies such as Amazon are part of an estimated $35 billion in investments entering India, while Indian firms have invested around $20 billion in the United States. Gor also said there is rising investor interest in India, particularly in sectors linked to manufacturing and technology, reflecting growing confidence in the country’s long-term economic trajectory.
India is also being positioned as a major healthcare and pharmaceutical partner in US strategy. Gor highlighted that India supplies roughly 40% of generic medicines used in the United States, underscoring its importance in global healthcare supply chains. He added that both countries are working on expanding research collaboration and fellowship programmes aimed at boosting innovation and job creation. While acknowledging policy differences, Gor described India as a “trusted partner” and said the United States remains committed to strengthening cooperation across trade, technology, healthcare, and strategic infrastructure.
