US Credibility and Alliances at Risk If Taiwan Policy is Compromised: Report

Report warns US credibility, alliances, and economic interests may suffer if Taiwan support is compromised in China talks.

A recent report by the European Times has warned that any perceived compromise by the United States on Taiwan during future diplomatic engagement with China could significantly damage Washington’s global credibility, alliance networks, and long-term strategic interests. The report comes amid discussions over a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. It argues that Taiwan is not just a regional issue but a central pillar of US strategic posture in the Indo-Pacific, and any shift in stance could have consequences far beyond bilateral relations with China.

According to the European Times, Taiwan represents what it calls a “litmus test” for US commitment to its allies. The report cautions that if Washington were to signal that Taiwan’s democratic status could be negotiable, key regional partners such as Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines may begin questioning the reliability of American security guarantees. It further warns that such uncertainty could embolden Beijing and increase instability across the Indo-Pacific region.

The report also highlights Taiwan’s critical role in the global economy, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing. It notes that Taiwan is a key hub for advanced chip production, which underpins global technology supply chains. Any perceived US retreat, the report argues, could give China greater leverage over strategic industries and weaken America’s own technological competitiveness at a time of intensifying economic rivalry.

Beyond geopolitical and economic concerns, the publication also points to domestic political consequences in the United States. It suggests that Trump’s political image as a tough negotiator on China could face scrutiny if any agreement is interpreted as weakening support for Taiwan. The report adds that bipartisan backing for Taiwan in the US Congress could further complicate any policy shift, potentially triggering political backlash at home.

The analysis concludes that any engagement between Washington and Beijing will be closely watched for signals on Taiwan. It warns that “selling out Taiwan,” as it phrases it, could undermine US strategic credibility, weaken alliances, and diminish its moral authority on democracy-related issues. The report stresses that the stakes involve not only diplomacy but also long-term security and economic stability in the global order.
