US And Iran Prepare For Second Round Of Direct Talks In Islamabad On April 20

US and Iran are set for second round of direct talks in Islamabad on April 20.

The United States and Iran are preparing for a possible second round of direct talks in Islamabad on April 20, as diplomatic efforts continue to stabilise tensions following earlier inconclusive negotiations in Pakistan. According to multiple diplomatic and media reports, Islamabad is once again being positioned as a neutral venue for the high-stakes discussions, with Pakistan playing a mediating role between Washington and Tehran. The talks are expected to build on earlier face-to-face engagements held earlier this month, which ended without a final agreement but helped keep dialogue open between the two sides.

The first round of discussions in Islamabad reportedly involved a mix of direct and indirect exchanges, facilitated by Pakistani officials, and focused heavily on core sticking points such as Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and regional security concerns. Despite extended negotiations lasting many hours, both sides failed to bridge key differences, though they agreed to continue discussions.

Pakistan has emerged as a central diplomatic facilitator in the process, hosting delegations and helping maintain communication channels between the two adversaries. Officials in Islamabad have expressed optimism that continued engagement could prevent further escalation and potentially extend the fragile ceasefire currently holding in parts of the region.

The proposed second round of talks comes amid heightened geopolitical sensitivity, with both countries reportedly under pressure to avoid a return to open confrontation. Key unresolved issues include uranium enrichment limits, verification mechanisms, and the status of strategic maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a major point of contention.

While no formal confirmation has been issued by either Washington or Tehran regarding the April 20 meeting, diplomatic sources suggest preparations are underway, with logistics and security arrangements being coordinated in Islamabad. The outcome of the upcoming talks is expected to be crucial in determining whether negotiations can move toward a broader framework agreement or risk collapsing into renewed tensions.
