US Ambassador Sergio Gor Says India and US to Address Pending Trade Disputes

US envoy signals thaw in India ties with trade call and tech pact invite.

Washington’s newly appointed ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, announced on his first day in office that India and the United States will address pending trade disputes during a dedicated call scheduled for Tuesday. The statement reflects an early attempt to ease tensions that have arisen from recent tariff disagreements and associated market volatility. Gor described the current frictions as normal within a strong partnership, stating that genuine allies can disagree yet ultimately resolve differences through dialogue.

The ambassador emphasized the ongoing commitment to bilateral trade negotiations, noting that India’s status as the world’s most populous nation makes concluding agreements complex but achievable. He expressed determination to advance discussions toward a successful outcome. Gor further positioned the trade talks within a wider recalibration of US foreign policy, quoting Secretary of State Marco Rubio that 2026 will mark “a year of reciprocity” focused on fair trade, mutual respect, and shared security interests.

Beyond commerce, Gor highlighted the multifaceted nature of the India-US relationship, which encompasses cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health sectors. He portrayed the partnership as mature and resilient, capable of navigating disagreements while preserving strategic alignment. The upcoming trade call is viewed as a critical step to restore momentum amid recent strains.

In a parallel strategic development, Gor revealed that India will receive an invitation next month to join the US-led Pax Silica initiative. This economic security framework aims to safeguard critical technology supply chains, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence components, and essential minerals. Current members include the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, and Australia.

India’s impending inclusion in Pax Silica is interpreted as a diplomatic gesture to strengthen ties following a period of relative distance. The move coincides with renewed trade engagement and is expected to enhance collaboration on supply-chain resilience and advanced technology. Observers see the combined announcements as deliberate efforts by both capitals to stabilize and deepen the strategic partnership in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
