United Airlines Boeing 767 Strikes Lamppost and Truck While Landing at Newark Airport
United Airlines Boeing 767 hits lamppost and truck while landing at Newark; truck driver slightly injured.
A United Airlines flight struck a lamppost and a delivery truck while approaching landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, prompting an investigation by aviation authorities. The aircraft, identified as Flight 169, had arrived from Venice, Italy, and was carrying 221 passengers along with 10 crew members at the time of the incident.
According to officials, the aircraft made contact with a light pole and a tractor-trailer travelling on the New Jersey Turnpike during its descent at around 2 pm local time. Despite the mid-air collision with ground infrastructure, the plane managed to land safely, with only minor damage reported to the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident and stated that a detailed investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the unusual collision during landing. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether weather conditions, pilot error, or technical issues played a role.

Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that no injuries were reported among passengers or crew on board the aircraft. The driver of the truck involved in the incident sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being released.
A company executive from H&S Bakery, which owned the truck, stated that the vehicle itself remained largely undamaged, although part of the aircraft reportedly struck the driver’s side window, causing minor injuries. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, ensuring the safety of those involved and clearing the affected area on the highway.
United Airlines said it would conduct a thorough internal safety review and confirmed that the flight crew had been temporarily removed from duty as part of standard procedure. The incident has raised questions about flight safety protocols during landing approaches, even as authorities emphasise that such occurrences remain extremely rare in commercial aviation.
