UN Secretary-General Recognizes Indian Army Officer Major Swathi for Gender-Responsive Peacekeeping in South Sudan

Indian Army officer Major Swathi Shantha Kumar wins a UN award for gender-inclusive peacekeeping in South Sudan.

Major Swathi Shantha Kumar, an Indian Army officer from Bengaluru currently deployed with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has been honored with the prestigious UN Secretary-General's Award 2025 in the Gender Category for her outstanding contribution to gender-inclusive peacekeeping.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the 2025 award winners, recognizing Major Swathi's innovative project titled “Equal Partners, Lasting Peace.” Her initiative was selected from nominations submitted across all UN peacekeeping missions and agencies worldwide. It emerged as the top winner among four finalists in the Gender Category, receiving the highest number of votes through a global UN-wide voting process involving personnel from various missions.

Major Swathi played a pivotal role in enhancing gender parity within UNMISS by leading and effectively integrating the Indian Engagement Team. Under her command, the team conducted extensive operations, including short- and long-distance patrols, integrated riverine patrols, and dynamic air patrols reaching remote and conflict-affected counties across South Sudan. These sustained efforts significantly strengthened grassroots-level engagement and fostered a safer, more inclusive environment.

The project directly benefited over 5,000 women by enabling their meaningful participation in community activities and decision-making processes. The United Nations highlighted Major Swathi's leadership as a powerful example for future missions, underscoring how inclusive approaches can contribute to more effective and sustainable peacekeeping outcomes. Her recognition marks a proud moment for the Indian Armed Forces and reinforces India's longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide.
