UN Honors Nearly 4,500 Peacekeepers Killed In Line Of Duty
UN pays tribute to fallen peacekeepers for global service.
The United Nations on Friday paid tribute to thousands of peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty over nearly eight decades of global peacekeeping operations. The commemoration marked the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29, and highlighted the sacrifices made by personnel serving in conflict zones around the world. The ceremony took place at the Peacekeepers Memorial on the North Lawn of the UN headquarters in New York.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres led the tribute, laying a wreath in honor of the fallen and acknowledging the nearly 4,500 peacekeepers who have died while serving since the inception of UN peacekeeping missions. He said the UN Blue Helmet has become a global symbol of hope for communities facing conflict and instability, representing protection, assistance and international solidarity during times of crisis.
Guterres emphasized that UN peacekeeping remains one of the most effective tools of the international community for addressing conflict situations. He noted that peacekeepers work under extremely dangerous conditions while carrying out critical tasks such as reducing violence, supporting political processes, assisting humanitarian operations, facilitating elections and clearing landmines. According to him, their efforts often determine whether fragile peace processes succeed or collapse.

During the ceremony, the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal was awarded to 68 peacekeepers from 33 countries, including 59 who were killed in the previous year while serving in missions across the world. The UN chief said the recipients represent the highest ideals of service and sacrifice, describing them as individuals who were willing to risk everything to protect others. Their contributions were recognized as essential to maintaining global peacekeeping efforts.
The event also honoured individuals for exceptional courage and leadership. The Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage was awarded to the late Sergii Prykhodko of Ukraine and Matias Reyes of Uruguay. In addition, Abhilasha Barak of India, serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, received the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year award, while Stephanie Königs of Germany, deployed in South Sudan, was named UN Woman Police Officer of the Year.
According to UN data, more than 51,000 civilian, military and police personnel are currently deployed across 11 active peacekeeping missions worldwide. Since the establishment of UN peacekeeping operations 78 years ago, over two million personnel have served in 71 missions across four continents. The United Nations General Assembly officially designated May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers in 2003, reinforcing global recognition of their service and sacrifice.
