UN Backs Trump’s International Stabilization Force for Gaza in Landmark Vote

Global powers back U.S.-led plan for multinational peacekeeping mission in Gaza.

The United Nations Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing President Donald Trump’s proposal for an International Stabilization Force in Gaza, delivering a major diplomatic victory for the incoming U.S. administration. The measure passed with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from Russia and China, formally supporting the deployment of a multinational contingent to oversee the ceasefire and facilitate reconstruction efforts following the October 2025 Israel-Hamas agreement.

The resolution authorizes the creation of a temporary international force, set to operate until December 2027 with the possibility of extension. Composed of troops from Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, and coordinated with Israeli forces, the mission will supervise the phased withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces while ensuring security and enabling large-scale humanitarian access. A U.S.-chaired oversight board, termed the “Board of Peace,” will submit biannual reports to the Security Council on progress toward stability and longer-term political negotiations.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz described the vote as “a decisive step toward a secure and prosperous Gaza alongside a safe Israel.” UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric welcomed the resolution, emphasizing the need for rapid implementation and increased humanitarian assistance to address acute shortages of food, medicine, and shelter across the territory.

The resolution builds directly on the October ceasefire framework while incorporating Trump’s broader vision for regional stabilization. It explicitly references the eventual resumption of negotiations on Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution, though it prioritizes immediate security and governance arrangements. The Palestinian Authority issued a cautious statement welcoming international involvement as a pathway toward self-determination.

The adoption follows weeks of intense negotiations, during which a competing Russian draft resolution focused exclusively on immediate Palestinian statehood recognition was withdrawn after facing U.S. opposition. The abstentions by Russia and China reflect lingering divisions over sequencing of political and security measures, yet the overwhelming consensus marks a rare moment of alignment on one of the world’s most intractable conflicts. Implementation will now shift to urgent technical planning for deployment and funding.
