Ukraine Shoots Down 122 Russian Drones Overnight, Yet Russia Claims Battlefield Success

Russia, Ukraine claim battlefield progress; drone strikes continue as peace talks stall amid global distractions.

Russia and Ukraine have made conflicting claims of battlefield progress in their four-year-old war, even as the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians and infrastructure. Ukraine reported pushing back Russian forces in parts of the front line, while the Kremlin asserted that Moscow’s military operations are advancing successfully.

Overnight drone strikes by Russia on two Ukrainian cities injured at least 14 people, including two children, according to local emergency services. The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted 122 of the 137 drones launched by Russian forces during the night, highlighting the ongoing aerial threat to civilian areas.

Ukrainian Maj. Gen. Oleksandr Komarenko stated that despite limited manpower, Ukrainian troops recently regained nearly all of the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk industrial region, reclaiming over 400 square kilometres (150 square miles) from Russian control. He described the overall front-line situation as difficult but under control, with intense fighting concentrated near Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine and Oleksandrivka in the south.

The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War noted that Ukraine’s counterattacks are producing tactical, operational, and strategic effects that could disrupt Russia’s planned spring-summer 2026 offensive. Meanwhile, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov cited Russian President Vladimir Putin as telling US President Donald Trump that Russian forces are advancing successfully, framing it as a potential incentive for Kyiv to negotiate a settlement, despite repeated Ukrainian demands for a lasting peace deal.

The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict has shifted global attention away from Ukraine, a development Moscow is reportedly hoping will distract Western powers, drive up oil prices, and reduce military support for Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in response, is leveraging Ukraine’s drone technology in Middle East conflicts to gain diplomatic leverage and secure advanced American air defence missiles critical to countering Russian attacks.

The war’s continuation underscores a complex geopolitical landscape, where both Moscow and Kyiv are attempting to manage international perception, military pressure, and strategic alliances while the humanitarian impact on civilians remains severe.
