Ukraine Sees Widespread Protests Following Sudden Defence Minister's Removal
Defence Minister's Removal Triggers Nationwide Ukraine Protests
Large protests broke out across Ukraine on Thursday after the government removed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov from office as part of a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle ordered by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Demonstrations were reported in several cities, with the largest gathering taking place in central Kyiv, where more than 1,000 people assembled to voice their opposition to the decision. Protesters sang the Ukrainian national anthem, waved Ukrainian and European Union flags, and chanted slogans including "Shame" and "Bring Fedorov back."
Fedorov, who had served as defence minister for only six months, had earned a reputation as a reformer seeking to modernise Ukraine's military during the ongoing war with Russia. His tenure came at a crucial stage of the conflict, with the armed forces attempting to strengthen operational capabilities after more than four years of full-scale war. Supporters credited him with pushing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and adapting the military to evolving battlefield challenges.
The minister announced his resignation late on Wednesday, describing it as "a great honour to serve the Ukrainian people." However, neither the presidency nor the government provided an official explanation for his removal. The absence of a public reason fuelled speculation among protesters and political observers, many of whom viewed the move as linked to internal disagreements within Ukraine's military leadership rather than a routine administrative reshuffle.

Some demonstrators alleged that Fedorov's dismissal reflected growing tensions between him and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky. While Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed any such conflict, the perception of divisions within the country's defence establishment has added to public concern. "I believe that his dismissal is a slap in the face of the Ukrainian people," 30-year-old business owner Vlada Roman told AFP while participating in the protest in Kyiv.
The protests come at a time when Ukraine has shown signs of stabilising its military position after months of intense fighting. Recent operations have reportedly slowed the pace of Russian advances in several sectors while Ukrainian forces have increased long-range drone strikes targeting Russian military infrastructure and oil facilities. Analysts say any major leadership change within the defence ministry at such a critical juncture could raise questions about policy continuity and military planning, although the government has not indicated that its overall defence strategy will change.
The demonstrations underscore the public support Fedorov had built in a short period and reflect broader concerns about transparency in key government decisions during wartime. As Ukraine continues to confront Russia's invasion, the government's handling of the reshuffle and the appointment of new defence leadership are likely to remain under close public and international scrutiny. Officials have yet to provide further details on the reasons behind Fedorov's departure or announce any measures aimed at addressing the concerns raised by protesters.
