Ukraine Seeks Clarity On Russia’s May 9 Ceasefire Plan
Ukraine presses for clarity on Russia’s May 9 three‑day ceasefire proposal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine is seeking clarification on Russia’s proposed short-term ceasefire linked to May 9, as Moscow suggests a temporary pause in fighting around its Victory Day commemorations.
The proposal, floated by Russia in discussions involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, reportedly envisions a brief ceasefire around May 9, the day Russia marks the Soviet victory in World War II. According to diplomatic briefings, the idea is being presented as a symbolic pause during national celebrations.
However, Kyiv has not accepted the proposal and is instead asking for detailed clarification on its scope and intent. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed officials to contact the United States to understand whether the ceasefire is meant as a genuine step toward de-escalation or merely a short operational pause.

Ukrainian leadership has stressed that it supports a broader and more durable cessation of hostilities rather than a limited truce tied to symbolic dates. Officials argue that previous short-term ceasefires have failed to produce lasting reductions in violence.
The development comes amid continued fighting and intensified strikes on both sides, with Ukraine maintaining that any peace initiative must include clear security guarantees and long-term commitments rather than temporary arrangements.
Russia’s proposal has also coincided with adjustments to its May 9 Victory Day plans, reportedly scaling back military displays due to security concerns. Despite this, Kyiv remains cautious, framing the offer as insufficient without further details and verifiable commitments.
As discussions continue, Ukraine’s position underscores its broader diplomatic stance: any ceasefire must be sustainable, enforceable, and part of a comprehensive framework to end the ongoing conflict rather than a short-lived pause tied to ceremonial events.
