UK Rebrands East Jerusalem Consulate As Mission After Israel Dispute Over Settlement Sanctions
UK renames Jerusalem consulate amid Israel tensions
The United Kingdom has renamed its nearly 200-year-old Consulate General in East Jerusalem as the “UK Mission, Jerusalem” following a diplomatic dispute with Israel over British sanctions targeting Israeli settlement activity. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said on Thursday that the building would remain open and operational, although Britain has scaled down its consular operations. The renamed mission will continue providing what the UK described as vital services in East Jerusalem and to Palestinians, while maintaining Britain’s diplomatic presence and engagement in the region. Miliband said Britain does not accept that the Israeli government has the legal authority to close the British Consulate General in Jerusalem, which has operated for nearly two centuries.
He reiterated the UK’s longstanding position that East Jerusalem is occupied territory, in line with the position Britain has maintained in relation to relevant United Nations resolutions. The Foreign Secretary said the change in designation followed discussions with the Israeli government and would allow Britain to continue its work while operating the facility under a different name. The dispute follows British measures announced against Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank. The UK has said it would restrict trade involving goods produced in Israeli settlements and impose sanctions on individuals and companies supporting, facilitating or benefiting from settlement activity.
London has argued that such measures are intended to address the situation in the Palestinian territories and protect the prospects of a two-state solution. Israel objected to the British actions and called for the closure of the East Jerusalem consulate. The British Consulate General in Jerusalem has traditionally played a distinct role in the UK's relations with Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. Its responsibilities include consular services and diplomatic engagement concerning Palestinian affairs, while the British Embassy in Tel Aviv handles Britain’s primary diplomatic relationship with Israel.

The UK has maintained that Jerusalem’s final status should be determined through negotiations and has not recognised Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem. Britain’s position on the city remains tied to its broader support for a negotiated two-state solution. The renaming does not mean the British presence in Jerusalem has ended. The UK has said the mission will continue providing essential services and maintaining its longstanding work with Palestinians. Some British diplomatic staff and their families have been temporarily withdrawn for security reasons, while the mission will operate on a reduced scale.
The British government has also indicated that it intends to maintain its presence in Jerusalem and continue discussions with Israel over the future arrangements. The development comes amid broader disagreements between London and Jerusalem over Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories. Britain has repeatedly raised concerns about settlement expansion and its impact on the prospects for a two-state solution, while Israel has criticised foreign governments for imposing measures against Israeli settlements. Despite the dispute over the consulate, Britain has chosen to retain the facility and continue diplomatic operations from East Jerusalem. The British Embassy in Tel Aviv remains separate and is not affected by the renaming of the Jerusalem mission.
