UK Police Face Nationwide Backlash for Handcuffing Dying Teen Henry Nowak on Killer's Word

Henry Nowak, 18, was handcuffed while dying after attacker Vickrum Digwa falsely claimed racism.

British police are facing intense scrutiny following the handling of a fatal stabbing case involving 18-year-old Henry Nowak in Southampton, England, after bodycam footage showed officers handcuffing the teenager while he was critically injured. The incident, which occurred in December 2025, has sparked public outrage across the United Kingdom and renewed debate over police decision-making in violent crime investigations. Demonstrators gathered outside the Southampton police station on June 2, demanding accountability and answers over the treatment of the victim in his final moments.

According to court proceedings, Nowak was stabbed during an encounter with 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa in Southampton. Digwa allegedly claimed to police that he had been assaulted, prompting officers to initially treat the wounded teenager as a suspect rather than the victim. Despite suffering severe stab wounds, Nowak was restrained at the scene as emergency responders and officers assessed the situation. The case drew widespread attention after footage emerged showing the teenager pleading for help.

Police bodycam recordings captured Nowak telling officers, “I’ve been stabbed” and “I can’t breathe,” while one officer reportedly responded by expressing doubt about the severity of his injuries. The footage has become central to public criticism of the police response, with many questioning why officers failed to immediately recognize the seriousness of his condition. Protesters have since adopted the phrase “I can’t breathe” as a rallying cry during demonstrations demanding justice and reform.

The controversy reached the highest levels of government, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer describing the incident as one that raises “serious questions” about police conduct. Starmer specifically highlighted concerns regarding whether allegations of racism influenced decision-making at the scene. He stated that the footage makes it impossible to ignore the need for a thorough examination of how events unfolded and whether proper procedures were followed by responding officers.

Nowak’s family has strongly condemned the treatment their son received, describing it as “inhumane and degrading.” Speaking outside court after the sentencing, his father, Mark Nowak, said the family holds Digwa fully responsible for the murder but believes Henry should not have died while effectively under police control on a public street. The family has also called on the British government to treat knife crime as a national emergency and strengthen measures aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

On June 1, Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. The court heard that he used a large Sikh dagger, which he said he carried for religious reasons, to fatally stab Nowak. During sentencing, Judge Mousley KC said Digwa’s actions had stirred racial tensions and caused concern within the Sikh community. The judge further stated that the convicted man had brought shame upon his family, community, and religion through a crime that continues to reverberate across Britain.
