UK Lawmaker Seeks Court Order To Restrict Grok's Image Generation

A British lawmaker has asked the High Court in London to order Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, to prevent its Grok chatbot from generating non-consensual sexualised images of her. Labour Party MP Jess Asato, who filed a lawsuit against xAI, alleges the AI platform was designed and trained in a way that enabled users to create manipulated sexualised content using her likeness. The case is being closely watched as it could set a legal precedent for how privacy and data protection laws apply to AI developers.

Asato said she decided to take legal action after users allegedly generated fake sexualised images of her through Grok, including a video depicting her "being chloroformed and prepared for a sexual assault," following her public criticism of Elon Musk and the chatbot. She has filed claims for misuse of private information and breaches of data protection laws, arguing that xAI failed to implement adequate safeguards to prevent such content from being created.

According to court filings, Asato is seeking an injunction requiring xAI to introduce "effective and permanent technical measures" to ensure Grok cannot generate manipulated images of her in the future. Her legal team said the case could have wider implications for the artificial intelligence industry, arguing that no previous case has applied privacy and data protection laws to an AI developer in this manner. xAI has not yet responded publicly to the allegations or filed its defence in the case.

The lawsuit comes as Grok faces increasing regulatory scrutiny in several countries over concerns about its ability to generate non-consensual sexualised content. Court documents cited by Asato's lawyers state that while Grok's internal prompts instruct the chatbot not to assist users in criminal activity, they also indicate there are no restrictions on adult sexual content or fictional material involving violent themes. Her lawyer, Ravi Naik, argued that the chatbot's behaviour reflects the design choices made by its developers and that those decisions should carry legal consequences.

The case adds to growing global concerns over the misuse of generative AI tools to create manipulated images and videos. Earlier this year, xAI introduced additional restrictions on Grok's image-generation capabilities, including blocking certain requests involving revealing images where prohibited by law. However, Reuters previously reported that the chatbot continued to generate sexualised images in some cases despite those safeguards. Similar legal challenges have also been filed against xAI in the United States and the Netherlands, underscoring increasing pressure on AI developers to strengthen protections against misuse of their technology.
