Two Trams Collide on Erasmus Bridge, Injuring 15 in Rotterdam

At least 15 people were injured, including one person who sustained serious injuries, after two trams collided on Rotterdam's iconic Erasmus Bridge on Wednesday. Local authorities confirmed that emergency responders rushed to the scene following the crash, which occurred on one of the Dutch city's busiest transport links. The Erasmus Bridge, spanning the Maas River, serves as a key route for both road traffic and public transportation, making the incident particularly disruptive during the day.

Webcam footage captured the moment one tram crashed into the rear of another that was already on the bridge. The impact sent debris scattering across multiple traffic lanes and caused significant damage to both vehicles. In response to the collision, authorities immediately closed the Erasmus Bridge to all traffic in both directions while emergency crews secured the area and assessed the extent of the damage. The closure also affected public transport services and road traffic in the surrounding areas.

Images from the scene showed a large emergency response involving ambulances, firefighters, police officers, and medical personnel. Rescue teams evacuated injured passengers using stretchers and wheelchairs before transporting them to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rotterdam authorities initially reported that 18 people had been injured but later revised the official figure to 15, according to Dutch public broadcaster NOS. Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the collision, and an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
