Tsunami Update: Monster Tsunami Strikes Alaska, Threatens Hawaii with 10-Foot Waves

Massive 8.8 quake triggers Pacific-wide tsunami alerts.

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula has unleashed tsunami waves across the Pacific, with Hawaii bracing for waves up to 10 feet high, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). The quake, one of the strongest in modern history, struck at 03:17 local time near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, followed by powerful aftershocks, including a 6.9-magnitude tremor, per the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Tsunami waves have already struck Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and Hawaii, with a 4-foot wave recorded in Haleiwa, Oahu, arriving at 12-minute intervals. The PTWC warns of potential larger waves, urging residents to seek higher ground. Tsunami warnings are active for Hawaii, parts of Alaska, and Northern California, with advisories extending across the US West Coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is closely monitoring the situation.

In Japan, nearly 2 million people have been ordered to evacuate coastal zones, with security perimeters established at beaches like Inage Beach in Chiba. Russia’s northern Kuril Islands reported waves up to 13 feet, flooding ports and prompting evacuations. The quake’s impact spans the Pacific, with alerts issued from New Zealand to Central America, as authorities brace for further waves and potential destruction.
