Trump’s Iran War Strategy Puts US Ties With Oman, South Korea Under Strain
Trump’s Iran strategy is straining ties with key US partners.
US President Donald Trump has moved to scale back annual military exercises with South Korea and threatened military action against Oman, two American partners, amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. The moves have raised concerns over Washington’s relations with key allies as the war places growing demands on US military resources and diplomatic efforts.
Trump ordered Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” joint military exercises with South Korea, which are designed to prepare Seoul for potential threats from North Korea. Trump argued that the drills were costly and pointed to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He also criticised South Korea for not supporting his position on the Iran conflict. Seoul responded cautiously, expressing hope that Trump’s relationship with Kim could eventually contribute to meaningful dialogue.
Trump also threatened Oman over its role in discussions concerning the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that the United States could take military action against the Gulf nation if it interfered with a potential agreement involving Iran and navigation through the strategic waterway. Oman has been involved in diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, while its geographical position along the Strait of Hormuz makes it an important player in any discussions over maritime access.

The remarks have prompted wider questions about Trump’s approach to traditional US alliances. Critics argue that his reliance on personal relationships and public threats could weaken long-standing diplomatic partnerships. Retired US Navy Admiral James Stavridis criticised Trump’s approach to both North Korea and Oman, arguing that such moves run counter to the interests of the United States at a time when stable international relationships are particularly important.
Trump has frequently challenged established diplomatic norms through warnings directed at both US rivals and allies. European officials have previously faced difficult choices over whether to publicly respond to his threats, fearing that direct confrontation could complicate diplomatic efforts. Some diplomats have adopted a cautious approach, seeking to protect their national interests while avoiding actions that could further escalate tensions.
The latest moves involving South Korea and Oman have therefore added to concerns over the direction of US foreign policy under Trump. Supporters argue that his unpredictable approach strengthens American leverage, while critics contend that repeated pressure on allies could weaken confidence in US commitments. As the Iran conflict continues, Washington’s ability to maintain cooperation with partners across Asia and the Middle East is likely to remain a central foreign policy challenge.
