Trump's First 100 Days: A Look At The Promises Made and What Was Kept

Trump’s First 100 Days: Promises in Progress, Challenges Persist

As President Donald Trump marks his 100th day in office, his administration’s aggressive push to fulfill campaign promises has reshaped federal policy and foreign relations. Backed by a Republican-controlled Congress, Trump has made strides in several areas, but legal battles and unfulfilled pledges raise questions about their longevity. Here’s a look at key promises and their status.

Beating Inflation
Trump vowed to reduce prices, claiming, “We’re going to get those prices down.” Inflation has dropped from 9.1% in 2022 to 3% in January 2025 and 2.4% in March. However, the Federal Reserve warns that Trump’s tariff policies could drive prices up by taxing imports, potentially undermining this progress.

Cracking Down on Illegal Immigration
A signature promise, Trump has significantly reduced illegal border crossings. From 249,740 in December 2023, crossings fell to 47,324 in December 2024 under Biden, and further to 7,181 in March 2025 under Trump. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has ramped up arrests, but deportations may not yet surpass Biden’s 2024 record, and some deportations without due process face legal challenges.

Slashing Energy Bills
Trump promised to cut energy costs by half to three-quarters within 12 to 18 months. This pledge remains pending, with no concrete actions reported to achieve it. The timeline extends into 2026, leaving its feasibility uncertain.

Implementing Tariffs
Trump pledged widespread tariffs on foreign goods and followed through, targeting Canada, Mexico, and China with taxes as high as 145%. Announced as “Liberation Day” on April 2, these tariffs have caused stock market volatility. Trump has scaled back some plans for negotiations, but the trade war continues to disrupt markets.

Ending the Russia-Ukraine War
Trump repeatedly claimed he would resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict “before arriving at the Oval Office” or within a day. Despite initiating talks, no resolution has been achieved, marking a clear failure to deliver on this promise.

Delivering Tax Cuts
Trump promised to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security payments and to make his first-term tax cuts permanent. These require Congressional approval, and with thin Republican majorities, no legislation has passed. Tariffs may increase the tax burden, complicating this pledge.

Targeting Education
Trump threatened to cut university funding to combat antisemitism, DEI programs, and foreign students he deems anti-American. Harvard faces over $2 billion in frozen grants for resisting these demands, while other schools have complied. Legal battles loom over these coercive tactics.

Reshaping Culture
Trump’s anti-“woke” agenda has eliminated DEI programs and purged diversity references in federal communications. At the Pentagon, efforts to remove content mentioning “gay” or minority contributions sparked backlash but were largely reversed. An executive order bans Smithsonian funding for programs promoting “improper ideology.”

Rolling Back Transgender Rights
Trump fulfilled promises to restrict transgender rights, signing executive orders banning transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports and seeking to reinstate a military transgender ban, pending Supreme Court review.

Pardoning January 6 Rioters
Trump kept his Day 1 promise to pardon January 6 rioters, granting clemency to about 1,500 individuals, including those convicted of violent acts against police, despite controversy.

While Trump’s first 100 days reflect bold action, legal challenges and economic risks threaten sustainability. His administration’s transformative agenda remains a work in progress, with mixed outcomes shaping his early legacy.
