'Trump Wasn't Going to Sit Back': Why the US Launched Operation Epic Fury Against Iran
US officials reveal Iran was planning preemptive strikes and expanding nuclear capacity before the US-Israel operation.
The United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes across Iran on Saturday following stalled nuclear negotiations and claims that Tehran had resumed its nuclear activities, officials confirmed. The operation, named ‘Operation Epic Fury', targeted multiple Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran, and marked one of the most significant military escalations in the region in recent years. US officials said the strikes were preemptive, aimed at preventing Iran from potentially launching missiles against American forces or allies.
According to senior US officials, President Donald Trump was “forced to act” after intelligence indicated that Iran was preparing to launch preemptive missiles or retaliatory strikes. “We are not going to be held hostage by Tehran,” said one official, noting that waiting to be attacked first could have resulted in substantially higher casualties and damage. The decision underscored Washington’s focus on defensive pre-emption to mitigate perceived threats from Iran’s expanding missile and nuclear capabilities.
Intelligence reports highlighted Tehran’s accelerated nuclear developments, including reconstruction of enrichment and conversion sites and expansion of centrifuge manufacturing at five times the permitted rate. Iran had reportedly developed advanced IR-6 centrifuges, described as the fastest of their kind, raising concerns over the country’s ability to produce highly enriched uranium rapidly. US and Israeli authorities emphasized that precise targeting was intended to disrupt Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and prevent further escalation.

The airstrikes reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, along with his immediate family, according to Iranian media reports. The announcement of his death immediately prompted Iran to vow revenge, describing the response as “the most ferocious offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic". The Revolutionary Guards warned that retaliatory attacks would target US and Israeli interests across the Middle East, signalling the potential for a prolonged regional conflict.
In retaliation, Iran launched missile strikes on multiple Gulf cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain. Videos circulating on social media showed explosions and smoke near the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and damage at Dubai International Airport. Several loud blasts were reportedly heard in Doha, highlighting the rapid escalation and the broad geographic scope of Iran’s counterstrikes. Regional authorities have urged heightened vigilance and caution amid the ongoing attacks.
Analysts have warned that the US-Israel airstrikes and Iran’s retaliation could significantly destabilise the Middle East, affecting global energy markets and international security. Diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify, but officials caution that both sides appear committed to military posturing in the immediate term. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for regional allies, civilian populations, and global geopolitical stability.
