Trump Unveils Plan For 250-Foot ‘One Nation Under God’ Arch In Washington

Trump proposes a 250-foot triumphal arch near Lincoln Memorial with patriotic inscriptions in Washington.

President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious proposal to construct a massive triumphal arch in the U.S. capital, featuring a gilded winged figure holding a torch and crown, flanked by eagles and guarded by lions. The design was detailed in a 12-page plan released by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts on Friday, outlining a monument intended to reshape the city’s iconic skyline.

According to the proposal, the structure would rise 250 feet (76.2 meters), making it significantly taller than the nearby Lincoln Memorial, which stands at 99 feet (30.2 meters). The arch would be located near the Lincoln Memorial on the eastern side and extend toward Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia to the west, positioned within a traffic circle linking Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia.

The monument would carry inscriptions in gold reading “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” on either side. The design also includes elaborate decorative elements, including symbolic eagles and lions, reinforcing the classical style of triumphal arches seen in other major world capitals.

Trump has publicly promoted the project, describing it on social media as a “GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch” that would serve as a landmark for generations. He has also argued that Washington, D.C., has long lacked such a monument, claiming that earlier efforts to build one were never completed due to historical disruptions and shifting priorities.

In remarks earlier this year, Trump said the idea dates back roughly 200 years and referenced unsuccessful attempts in the early 20th century to construct a similar structure. He has also pointed to the presence of grand monuments in other global cities as justification for the addition of a comparable landmark in the U.S. capital.

The proposed arch is part of a broader set of architectural and design changes Trump has pursued during his second term, including modifications to the White House and its surrounding grounds. The plan is expected to generate further debate over urban design, historical preservation, and the symbolism of new national monuments in Washington, D.C.
