US President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to purchase a new Tesla car "tomorrow morning", as a public gesture of support for Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a key figure among his trusted lieutenants in his adminsitration.
The decision comes amid escalating protests and violent incidents targeting Tesla facilities and vehicles across the US and parts of Europe, driven by public backlash against Musk's role in the Trump administration.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump praised Musk's efforts, saying, "To Republicans, Conservatives, and all great Americans, Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!” He condemned what he described as an “illegal and collusive boycott” of Tesla by the “Radical Left Lunatics,” accusing them of attempting to harm Musk and his vision.
Trump added, “I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American. Why should he be punished for putting his tremendous skills to work to help MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN???”"
Musk, who was recently appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has overseen sweeping federal job cuts and program eliminations aimed at slashing govenment spending. These controversial measures have fueled widespread dissent, with critics blaming Musk for the resulting economic and social disruptions.
The backlash has spilled over into attacks on Tesla, Musk's flagship company. In the past week alone, a Tesla dealership in Oregon was targetted by gunfire, a charging station in Massachusetts was set ablaze, and a dealership in Colorado was vandalised with Molotov cocktails and graffiti reading "Nazi Cars". Besides, a video footage of citizens in Seattle using a sledgehammer to destroy a Tesla vehicle has gone viral online.
Tesla showrooms and drivers have also faced harassment and violence, both in the US and abroad. The unrest has taken a toll on Tesla's stock, which plummeted to levels which turned out to be the steepest ever in the last five years. Musk briefly addressed the chaos stating, "This is crazy," but has otherwise remained silent on the matter.
Law enforcement agencies are responding to the wave of incidents, The FBI is collaborating with Oregon police to investigate the dealership shooting, while federal prosecutors in Denver have charged a woman linked to the Colorado attack.
Trump's planned Tesla purchase appears intended to counter the negative narrative surrounding Musk and bolster confidence in the company amid these turbulent times.
