US President Donald Trump on Saturday shared a throwback photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, joking about the "unfriendly look" in the picture while reiterating that the two leaders have maintained a positive relationship. Trump posted the photograph on Truth Social amid renewed tensions surrounding upcoming US-South Korea military exercises and North Korea's criticism of the drills.
"Despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture, there are many where we're smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!" Trump wrote in his post. His remarks referred to his previous meetings and interactions with Kim, during which the two leaders have held direct talks on North Korea's nuclear programme and relations between Pyongyang and Washington.
The post came as North Korea criticised the planned Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises involving the United States and South Korea. The annual drills are scheduled to begin on August 17 and continue until August 27. This year's exercises are expected to include training related to drones, GPS disruption and cyberattacks as the allies seek to prepare for what they describe as evolving military capabilities in the region.

North Korea has consistently criticised joint US-South Korea military exercises, portraying them as preparations for an attack. On Friday, a spokesperson for North Korea's Foreign Ministry accused Washington, Seoul and Tokyo of developing their military cooperation into what Pyongyang described as a "nuclear alliance". The spokesperson warned that North Korea would respond to what it considers an increased security threat by strengthening its deterrence capabilities.
The North Korean statement also argued that the upcoming exercises differ from military drills conducted in previous years and are designed to improve the allies' ability to conduct operations under changing conditions. Pyongyang has repeatedly maintained that military activities involving the United States and its regional allies contribute to tensions on the Korean Peninsula, while Washington and Seoul describe their exercises as defensive preparations.
The latest exchange comes amid continued military activity by North Korea. On August 12, Pyongyang conducted what South Korean authorities described as a suspected ballistic missile launch toward the East Sea, according to Yonhap News Agency. It was reportedly the country's second such launch in less than a week. The US Pacific Command referred to the incident more generally as a missile launch, underscoring the continuing security tensions surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
