Trump Seeks 'Special' Midterm Campaign To Preserve Republican Majority In Congress

Republicans are turning to President Donald Trump to help protect their majorities in Congress in the 2026 US midterm elections, despite historical headwinds and concerns over the economy, the war in Iran and Trump's relatively low approval ratings. At the party's midterm convention in Dallas, Republican leaders are seeking to energise their base and convince voters that supporting Trump-backed candidates remains the strongest path to keeping control of the House and Senate. Not all Republican lawmakers attended the convention, however, underscoring the differing political pressures within the party. Republicans are also competing for public attention with the National Football League, whose season began this week. With the November election approaching, the party's challenge will be to translate Trump's appeal and the energy generated by the convention into support for candidates across competitive House and Senate races. The outcome will determine whether Republicans can maintain their congressional majorities or whether Democrats regain control of one or both chambers.
