Trump Says Venezuela Not Ready For Elections Amid Political Uncertainty

US President Donald Trump has said Venezuela is not yet prepared to hold elections, while claiming that progress has been made in the country following the removal of former leader Nicolás Maduro. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the electoral process would need more time before it could move forward, while emphasizing the need to ensure that future elections are conducted properly.
Responding to questions about Venezuela’s political future, Trump said the country was “not really ready” for elections but added that developments had been positive. He praised Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez, who previously served as Maduro’s deputy, saying she was doing a “fantastic job” in managing the country during the transition period.
Instead of focusing primarily on electoral timelines, Trump highlighted Venezuela’s oil sector and economic recovery efforts. He said the country had significant oil exports and claimed that US involvement had contributed to improving economic conditions. Trump also said he believed he remained popular among Venezuelans because of what he described as efforts to restore economic stability.

Trump’s remarks come months after a US military operation on January 3 that removed Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Venezuela, according to the US administration’s position. Maduro is expected to face trial in the United States next year. However, Trump and his administration have provided limited details about when Venezuela could return to a fully competitive electoral system.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously said that Venezuela would need key democratic reforms before elections could take place. These include the restoration of a free press and the creation of a new electoral commission capable of overseeing a credible voting process.
The political situation in Venezuela remains highly contested following the 2024 presidential election, which returned Maduro to power but was rejected by the United States, the European Union, and several Latin American governments. Discussions over Venezuela’s future governance, economic recovery, and electoral reforms are expected to continue as international pressure and diplomatic efforts remain ongoing.
