Trump Revives Venezuela Annexation Talk With “51st State” Post

Trump shared graphic portraying Venezuela as the United States’ “51st state.”

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday shared a graphic on Truth Social depicting Venezuela as the “51st State” of the United States, reigniting controversy over his recent remarks about the South American nation. The post featured a map of Venezuela filled with the American flag and was published while Trump was travelling to China for a major summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The provocative post came a day after Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, publicly rejected any suggestion that the country could become part of the United States. Rodríguez said Venezuela had “never” considered becoming the 51st US state, even after former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro was captured earlier this year during a US military operation, according to reports.

Trump had earlier told Fox News that he was “seriously considering” the idea of making Venezuela a US state, while also highlighting the country’s vast oil reserves and strategic importance. His remarks have drawn criticism internationally and added to concerns over increasingly aggressive rhetoric surrounding US foreign policy in Latin America.

Rodríguez, who has overseen a gradual improvement in relations between Caracas and Washington since assuming leadership, has introduced reforms reopening Venezuela’s mining and oil sectors to foreign investment, particularly from American companies. Despite these developments, the political situation in Venezuela remains uncertain, with opposition groups continuing to demand fresh elections and democratic reforms.

When asked earlier this month about the possibility of holding new elections, Rodríguez said she did not know when a vote might take place, adding only that it could happen “sometime.” The uncertainty has fuelled speculation about Venezuela’s political future following months of instability and shifting international alliances.

Trump’s latest comments also fit into a broader pattern of controversial geopolitical statements involving potential US expansion or annexation. In recent months, he has made similar remarks regarding places such as Canada and Greenland, sparking debate among allies and critics over the direction of American foreign policy under his administration.
