Trump Rejects Iran’s War Compensation Demand Amid Escalating Tensions

Trump rejects Iran’s proposal demanding compensation and sanctions relief as US-Iran peace talks stall.

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated further as President Donald Trump rejected a peace proposal submitted by Tehran, calling it “totally unacceptable,” even as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict continue to stall. The development comes amid a months-long confrontation that has already disrupted global energy markets and heightened geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

According to reports, Iran has put forward a counterproposal in response to US-led peace efforts, demanding war reparations, the lifting of all American sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and international recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz. The strategically vital waterway is a key global oil transit route, and Iran has also sought the removal of restrictions on its control over the passage.

The conflict, which reportedly began on February 28 and involved both US and Israeli military actions against Iran, has seen intermittent pauses, including a ceasefire agreement in early April. However, despite multiple rounds of negotiations, a permanent settlement has remained out of reach, with both sides continuing to disagree on core issues, particularly Iran’s uranium enrichment programme.

Washington has consistently demanded that Iran halt its nuclear enrichment activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions and the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets. US officials also seek broader agreements to ensure the free movement of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which a significant portion of global crude supplies passes.

The latest Iranian demands have added further complexity to already fragile negotiations. A key Republican voice in the United States has reportedly urged a tougher stance, including consideration of military options, reflecting growing divisions within US political circles over how to handle the crisis.

The ongoing conflict has had wide-reaching economic consequences, particularly in global energy markets, where disruptions in oil supply routes have contributed to volatility and periodic shortages in several countries. With diplomatic talks still deadlocked and both sides maintaining firm positions, prospects for a comprehensive peace agreement remain uncertain.
