Trump Reiterates Claim of Halting India-Pakistan War Last Year
US President Trump repeated his assertion of preventing a war, a claim made over 90 times and consistently rejected by New Delhi.
Former US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he played a decisive role in preventing a war between India and Pakistan, repeating an assertion he has made several times since leaving office. The remarks were made during a recent public interaction, where Trump said his intervention helped defuse tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Trump reiterated that the situation between India and Pakistan had reached a critical point during his presidency and suggested that strong diplomatic pressure from his administration prevented the conflict from escalating into full-scale war. He did not, however, provide specific details or timelines to substantiate the claim in his latest statement.
India has consistently rejected Trump’s assertions in the past, maintaining that bilateral issues with Pakistan, including matters related to security and conflict, are handled directly between the two countries without third-party mediation. Indian officials have repeatedly emphasised that New Delhi’s position on Kashmir and cross-border tensions has remained unchanged and firmly bilateral.

The former US president has previously made similar claims in reference to heightened tensions following incidents such as the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and the subsequent military standoff. At the time, Indian authorities stated that while there were diplomatic engagements with multiple countries, no external power played a mediatory role in resolving the situation.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has at times welcomed international involvement in easing tensions with India, particularly on issues related to Kashmir. This divergence in positions has often surfaced whenever Trump reiterates his role, leading to renewed debate over the extent and nature of US engagement in South Asian security matters.
Trump’s repeated statements come amid his broader narrative highlighting foreign policy achievements during his tenure. While such claims continue to attract attention internationally, India’s official stance remains that decisions related to peace, conflict, and de-escalation with Pakistan are sovereign matters addressed through direct diplomatic and military channels.
