Trump Reaffirms Strong U.S. Military Presence in Poland
Trump assures Poland’s new leader of strong US presence.
President Donald Trump reaffirmed a robust U.S. military presence in Poland during a warm White House meeting with the country’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, on Wednesday. The visit, Nawrocki’s first abroad since taking office last month, underscored the deepening U.S.-Poland alliance amid heightened regional tensions driven by Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
Trump, who endorsed Nawrocki during Poland’s tight election earlier this year, hailed the U.S.-Polish relationship as “better than ever.” When asked about maintaining U.S. troops in Poland, where approximately 8,200 American soldiers are currently stationed, Trump was unequivocal: “We’ll put more there if they want.” Nawrocki called the guarantee of Poland’s security a “major success,” emphasizing shared values of independence and democracy.
The meeting comes at a critical juncture for Poland, which borders Ukraine and faces growing unease over Russia’s aggression and upcoming joint military exercises with Belarus. Nawrocki, a former historian and amateur boxer backed by the conservative Law and Justice party, expressed gratitude for Trump’s support and gave a nod to Polish Americans, highlighting the strong cultural ties between the nations.

At a news conference, Nawrocki revealed discussions with Trump about expanding the U.S. military footprint in Poland. He also voiced distrust of Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him a threat to the free world, despite his own criticisms of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for allegedly exploiting allies. Nawrocki has pledged continued support for Ukraine but prioritized Polish citizens for social services, echoing some of Trump’s rhetoric.
Trump’s optimism for brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine has waned since his August meetings with Putin in Alaska and Zelenskyy at the White House. Despite hopes for direct talks, Putin has shown no interest in negotiating, frustrating Trump’s efforts. Meanwhile, some Trump advisors advocate redirecting U.S. military resources to the Indo-Pacific to counter China, raising concerns in Europe about America’s long-term commitment to NATO.
The White House visit was marked by a poignant tribute to a Polish Air Force pilot killed in a recent F-16 crash, with U.S. jets flying in a missing man formation over the South Lawn. Nawrocki thanked Trump for the gesture, which underscored the military bond. Trump’s pre-election support for Nawrocki, including a White House visit and a trip by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to Poland, helped secure his victory over liberal rival Rafal Trzaskowski.
Despite Nawrocki’s tense relationship with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Trump praised his electoral success, calling the race “tough” but noting Nawrocki’s growing popularity. As Poland navigates its role in a volatile region, the U.S. commitment to its security remains a cornerstone of their alliance, with both leaders signaling readiness to strengthen ties further.
