Trump-Putin Summit Flops: No Ukraine War Deal
Alaska talks yield no resolution to ongoing conflict.
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to secure an agreement to end Russia’s war in Ukraine during their Friday summit, despite Putin claiming an “understanding” was reached. The 2½-hour meeting in Alaska produced no breakthrough in the conflict, Europe’s largest land war since 1945.
Trump called the talks “extremely productive,” noting agreement on several points but highlighting unresolved issues, including a major sticking point. “We didn’t get there,” he admitted, while remaining hopeful for future progress.

The summit marked a rare U.S. appearance for Putin, who has faced global isolation for a decade. By engaging with Trump, Putin delayed threatened U.S. sanctions tied to Russia’s efforts to end the fighting. With Russian forces advancing in Ukraine, the lack of a deal may allow Moscow to sustain battlefield gains while avoiding immediate consequences.
Putin commended Trump’s clear vision and commitment to U.S. prosperity, while stressing Russia’s interests. “Today’s agreements could pave the way for pragmatic U.S.-Russia relations,” he said. Trump reciprocated, thanking Putin and suggesting future meetings, even musing about a possible Moscow visit, saying, “That’s an interesting one.”
With no joint news conference and unanswered questions, the summit left observers with little clarity. As Ukraine’s war continues, the failure to reach a deal highlights the complexities of resolving global conflicts through diplomacy.
