Trump Pushes Peace Accord Over Ceasefire in Ukraine Talks
Trump advocates peace accord over ceasefire.
U.S. President Donald Trump, following a high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, declared that a direct peace accord, not a temporary ceasefire, is the best path to end the Russia-Ukraine war. In a Truth Social post after discussions with Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders, Trump stated, “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”
Trump’s stance reflects his belief that ceasefires, like the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015, often fail to resolve underlying conflicts, citing Russia’s history of violating 190 agreements with Ukraine. He confirmed that Zelenskyy will visit the White House on Monday to further discuss strategies, with a potential follow-up meeting with Putin if progress continues. “Potentially, millions of lives could be saved,” Trump wrote, emphasizing the urgency of a lasting solution.
The announcement follows months of U.S.-led efforts to broker peace, including a 30-day ceasefire proposal Ukraine accepted but Russia resisted. Tensions persist, with Zelenskyy rejecting territorial concessions, particularly over Crimea, while Putin demands Ukraine’s neutrality and withdrawal from four regions.
Trump’s push for a comprehensive accord aims to bypass temporary truces, but challenges remain, as Russia’s ongoing offensives and Kyiv’s insistence on security guarantees complicate negotiations. European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have praised Trump’s efforts but stress Ukraine’s inclusion in any deal.
