Trump Lands in Switzerland Amid Fierce Pushback on Greenland Seizure
Trump arrives in Davos amid allies' backlash over Greenland control bid.
US President Donald Trump arrived in Davos on Wednesday amid rising tensions with world leaders over his controversial push to seize control of Greenland. Trump’s arrival came after a delay caused by a “minor electrical issue” that forced Air Force One to turn back shortly after takeoff from the United States, landing instead in Zurich.
Ahead of the World Economic Forum, Trump mocked European leaders, emphasising the strategic importance of Greenland’s mineral resources for both US and NATO security. His remarks set the stage for a high-stakes diplomatic encounter with allies at the Swiss ski resort.
European leaders have voiced strong opposition to Trump’s Greenland ambitions. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that the move could cause a “rupture” in the US-led global system, while French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to resist what he described as “bullying” tactics.

Trump’s Treasury chief, Scott Bessent, attempted to calm tensions by urging European leaders to “take a deep breath” and wait for the president’s arrival before passing judgement on his proposals. The comments reflect the White House’s intent to frame the discussion as part of broader strategic negotiations.
Observers noted that Trump’s visit to Davos could reshape alliances and spark debates on territorial sovereignty, international law, and US-European relations. The Greenland issue is expected to dominate discussions at this year’s forum, alongside broader economic and geopolitical topics.
The focus is still on whether Trump will moderate his approach or move forward with plans that have alarmed important NATO allies and international stakeholders as world leaders get ready to meet with him.
