Trump Comments On Mourners' Reactions At Khamenei's State Funeral
Trump questions mourners' emotions at Khamenei's state funeral.
US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after questioning the authenticity of public mourning during the state funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In an interview with Axios, Trump said he had expected many Iranians to resent Khamenei because of his leadership record and suggested that the scenes of grief at the funeral may not have reflected genuine public sentiment.
Commenting on images of mourners gathered for the funeral, Trump remarked, “I thought the Iranians hated Khamenei. Maybe it's fake tears.” He also said the United States had agreed to pause negotiations with Iran during the funeral period and claimed Washington would not undertake military action while the ceremonies were underway. Trump further suggested that Iran’s senior leadership would be gathered in one place during the funeral but said the US would not target them because it wanted to preserve the possibility of future negotiations.
Iran has declared a week-long period of mourning following Khamenei’s death, with funeral ceremonies drawing tens of thousands of mourners in Tehran, alongside senior government officials, religious leaders and foreign dignitaries. State-organised processions have included prayers, religious chants and anti-US and anti-Israel slogans, reflecting the significance of the event within Iran’s political and religious establishment.

Trump’s remarks prompted criticism from Iranian officials and state-linked figures, who accused him of showing disrespect toward those attending the funeral and misunderstanding the cultural and religious significance of public mourning in Iran. Iran’s embassy in Armenia also responded publicly, rejecting Trump’s comments and criticising his assessment of the funeral ceremonies.
The comments come at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of conflict and stalled diplomatic efforts. While indirect negotiations remain under discussion, the exchange of sharp rhetoric has underscored the fragile state of US-Iran relations and the challenges facing any future diplomatic engagement.
