Trinmool's 'Pushpa' Jahangir Khan Arrested at India-Nepal Border by STF
Bengal STF arrests Trinamool's Jahangir Khan after Calcutta High Court intervention.
More than a month after the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress strongman Jahangir Khan was arrested by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) near the India-Nepal border. The arrest came after the Calcutta High Court declined to extend his interim protection and noted that multiple police cases had been registered against him following the declaration of election results on May 4. Authorities had been tracking Khan over allegations linked to threats, election-related offences, and other criminal activities.
Khan, who had styled himself after the popular film character “Pushpa,” remained under the scanner of law enforcement agencies during the election period. He had contested from the Falta Assembly constituency, which later witnessed controversy after allegations of electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering surfaced. The Election Commission subsequently ordered a repoll in the constituency, turning Falta into one of the most closely watched seats in the state.
The controversy intensified when senior IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, known for his tough policing image, was deployed as a special observer in Falta. Reports of intimidation and alleged political pressure in the area prompted increased security oversight. Sharma reportedly issued warnings against any attempts to influence voters or disrupt the electoral process, setting up a high-profile confrontation between law enforcement and local political figures.

In a dramatic political twist, Khan withdrew from the Falta contest just two days before the repoll held on May 21. He claimed that the move was taken in the interest of development and peace after receiving assurances regarding a special package for the constituency. However, the Trinamool Congress distanced itself from his decision and accused the BJP of creating an atmosphere of intimidation during the election process.
When votes were counted, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a massive victory, defeating CPM candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi by more than one lakh votes. Khan finished a distant fourth with fewer than 8,000 votes. His arrest now adds another chapter to the post-election political developments in West Bengal, where investigations into alleged electoral irregularities and related criminal cases continue to draw significant public and political attention.
