Tragedy in Kuhestak: Child and Teenager Among Victims of U.S. Missile Strike

A US missile reportedly struck a home in the southern Iranian coastal town of Kuhestak on Tuesday night, where dozens of people had gathered to celebrate the wedding of a local fisherman's daughter, according to Iranian state media and a rights group. Iranian officials said the strike killed four people, two women and two children aged four and sixteen, and wounded more than 60 others, with some reports putting the number of wounded above 68. A separate strike on a nearby communications tower reportedly killed a teenager, according to the rights group tracking casualties from the attack.

Heavy explosions shook Kuhestak, a small fishing town on the Strait of Hormuz in Iran's Hormozgan province, on Tuesday night, with security camera footage carried by Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency showing fireballs lighting up the night sky over the coastline. The strike came amid a renewed wave of American bombardment across southern Iran, with the US military saying it was targeting air defenses, radar systems and maritime assets in the region. According to the Hormozgan governor's office, the four confirmed victims were identified as four-year-old Amir Ali Karimi, sixteen-year-old Mohammad Malahi, and two women, Kolsoum Malahi and Zarkhatoun Taheri.

Footage circulated by Iranian state and semiofficial media showed significant damage to the residential building where the wedding was being held, along with a destroyed telecommunications tower nearby. Video from the scene showed debris scattered inside the building and children's belongings among the wreckage, while several neighboring residential structures also sustained damage from the blasts. Defense analysts examining fragments recovered from the site told reporters the weapon involved may have been a variant of the AGM-84K SLAM-ER, a US-made precision-guided cruise missile, though this has not been officially confirmed. US Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said the military was looking into reports of the strike on the wedding, though he did not confirm whether a formal investigation had been opened.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, condemned the strike as "brutal," describing it as part of what he called a broader "chain of atrocities" carried out by the United States during the ongoing conflict. He specifically referenced an earlier strike on a primary school in the nearby town of Minab, located roughly 30 kilometers from Kuhestak, which killed more than 100 children on February 28, the opening day of the war. The strike on Kuhestak came as part of a broader escalation between the United States and Iran following a monthlong lull in hostilities, with fighting resuming after the US military struck Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, citing concerns that Iran intended to use them to lay naval mines.

In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes toward US allies and bases across the Gulf region, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and Iraq, further intensifying a conflict that has now stretched on for more than six months, disrupted global oil markets, and placed mounting political pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the November midterm elections. The renewed violence underscores the volatility surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping chokepoint that has remained at the center of the six-month war since fighting first erupted in late February. With civilian casualties continuing to mount on the Iranian side and both nations trading strikes across the wider Gulf region, the prospects for a durable de-escalation remain uncertain even as diplomatic channels reportedly remain open between Washington and Tehran.
